Closingtime drew nearer
Wednesday for Jamaica Plain
institution Doyle’s Cafe, at a
City Hall hearing to transfer its
liquorlicenseto a new Seaport
outpost of Davio’s Northern
Italian Steakhouse.
The brief hearingbefore the
Boston LicensingCommission
was a key step in the $455,00 0
sale of the license, whichwill
probablyclosenext month,as
will Doyle’s, the political hang-
out that’s held downthe corner
of Washington and William
streets for 137 years.
Neither Doyle’s owner, Ge-
rard Burke, nor the ownerof
the real estate on which it sits —
Gerard’s uncle andformer
Doyle’s co-owner EddieBurke
— appeared at the hearing,
whichfocused on Davio’s need
for a license for its 15,000-

square-footrestaurant in the
lobbyof a waterfrontcondo-
minium building.
But in a statementWednes-
day, Eddie Burke explained his
family’s decisionto sell the site
of the beloved bar, whichhas
sparked a campaignto save it
since the news broke last week.
“It is our decision as a family
and as owners of the property
that we can no longer maintain
Doyle’s as somewouldlike or
thinkpractical,” Eddieand his
wife, Joni Ross Burke, said in a
statement. “We have therefore
chosento market the property
forsaleinordertosec ureour
much-deserved retirement.”
After the hearing, Pete Gori,
a longtime real estate broker
who is advising the Burkes, said
they are opento all kindsof
potentialbuyersfor the site,
includingones who would keep
it as a neighborhoodbar, if

possible.
“My clienthas no prefer-
ence”on how the site is used,
Gori said. “We will talk to any-
one, about anything, as long as
it’s a constructive conversa-
tion.”
A few members of the cam-
paign to save Doyle’s showed up
at the hearing, as did Jamaica
Plain resident Wayne Kurtz,
whosaid the episodereflects
the city’s misplaced priorities
when it comes to neighborhood
entrepreneurs.
“We needto do moreto help
small-business owners,” he
said.
When the hearing was
through,Kurtz challenged
Davio’s owner Steve DiFillippo,
himself a longtimeBoston
restaurateur, accusing him of
profiting off struggling
businesses to help his huge new
restaurant in the Seaport.

“I have nothingto do with
it,” DiFillippo responded. “If we
don’t buy this license, it’ll be
someone else tomorrow.”

Doyle’s liquor license transfer advances

ByMax Jungreis
GLOBECORRESPONDENT
The Lemelson-MIT Program
announced Wednesday it had
awarded its annual $500,000
prize to Arizona State Universi-
ty professor Cody Friesen for
his workin developing long-
lasting rechargeable batteries
andsolar panels that pull
drinking water out of the air.
Friesen’s rechargeable bat-
tery can providepowerto elec-
tric gridsin emergencies, and
the Lemelson-MITProgram
said the technology has been
used “during approximately
one million long-duration out-
ages, whilesimultaneously off-
setting thousandsof tonsof
CO2 emission.”
He was also recognizedfor a

secondinvention, so-called
SOURCEHydropanels, which
can create potablewater by ab-
sorbing water molecules from
the air. The devices are capable
of collecting water in condi-
tions as dry as 5 percent humid-
ity.
Friesen’s inventions,Lemel-
son Foundation executive direc-
tor Carol Dahlsaid in a state-
ment, “aretruly improving
lives, take into account environ-
mental considerations and have
become the basis for companies
that impact millions of people
around the world each year.” He
was also recognized by the MIT
Technology Review at its
EmTechMITconference
Wednesday.
Friesenreceived his PhD in

materials science and engineer-
ing fromMITin 2004.He is
currently an associate professor
of materials scienceat Arizona
State University. He also creat-
ed two companies for his inven-
tions, FluidicEnergy and Zero
Mass Water.
“As inventors,we have a re-
sponsibility to ensure our tech-
nology serves all of humanity
not simplythe elite,” Friesen
said in a statement. “At the end
of the day, our workis about
impact and this recognition
propelsus forwardas we de-
ploy SOURCE Hydropanels to
change the human relationship
to water across the globe.”

harness races have lobbied for a
big piece of the pie. That tug of
war continued Wednesday, in
front of a committee charged
with setting the split between
harness and thoroughbred
purses. The decision: It’s slated
to shift again, to 65-35, in favor
of the standardbreds.
Each of the three thorough-
bred projects needthe Legisla-
ture’s help to get to the starting
line. The race is on.
RRowley Group:This pro-
posal can be traced back to
2014, when Suffolk Downs
ended regular operations. The
main horsemen’s group, the
New England HPBA, wanted to
continuewith a much-abbrevi-
ated schedule. But a contingent
that became the MassTHAar-
gued it wasn’t enough to sup-
port the industry, and began to
seek an alternative. The land
search was a series of fits and
starts, but proponents say they
have a winner now. They hired
a former House Ways and
Means chief, Brian Dempsey, to
lobby on their behalf. Among
the things they want fromthe
Legislature: minimumrequire-
ments of 60 days of racing per
year and a mile-long track.
They also want lawmakers to
remove a restriction they say
prevents a new thoroughbred
track from opening within 50
miles of Suffolk Downs.
RNotos Group:A group led
by Quincy developer Thomas
O’Connell is pursuing an ambi-

uCHESTO

tious, $300 million project on a
275-acre site in Wareham, with
a racetrack as its hub. The proj-
ect would include slot ma-
chines, a hotel, and a Cape
Leaguebaseball field — not to
mention a new highway ramp
off Route 25. On Friday, Notos
announced it had hiredexperts
to set high safety standards, in
part to address increasing na-
tionwide concerns about horse
injuries. To pull this off, O’Con-
nell needs lawmakers to allow a
slots parlor license, with its
smaller required investment, in
Southeastern Massachusetts, as
an alternative to the full-scale
casino once envisioned for the
region. O’Connell argues the
market won’t support another
major casino.
RSterlingSuffolk:Then
there’s Sterling Suffolk Race-
course, the owners that over-
saw Suffolk Downs, the track in
East Boston and Revere now
poised for redevelopment. Ster-
ling Suffolk has lease rights for
the Great Barrington Fair-
grounds, a 55-acreproperty

where horses ran as recently as
two decades ago. This group
wants permission to keep its si-
mulcasting rights for Suffolk
County and to run races in the
Berkshires, in September and
October. That isn’t likely to be
enough to clear the 60-day
minimum the Rowley group
wants. Plus, the track is shorter
than one mile. Sterling Suffolk’s
chief operating officer, Chip
Tuttle, is skeptical any full-
fledged track operation could
survive without slots revenue
as a subsidy. He says his $15
million project could open as
soon as fall 2020, sooner than
the other two.
Betting on who will win this
race could be fun. However, the
future of a region’s industry is
at stake, not just walking-
around money. It’s hardto pick
a favorite just yet, but one thing
seems likely: Not everyone
walks away a winner.
