Rotation is at crossroads
froma shoulderinjury. The 30-year-
old beginshis five-year, $145million
extension next season.
Righthander Nate Eovaldi, in the
first year of his four-year, $68 million
deal,missedroughlythreemonths
while recovering first from surgery to
remove bone chips, and then biceps
tendinitis. In 10 starts this year, the
29-year-old has yet to record a deci-
sion whileposting a 6.44 ERA and al-
lowingan alarming 2.7 homers per
nine innings.
Meanwhile,while the RedSox
have an emerginggroupof potential
big league starters formingat the
lower and middlelevels of their sys-
tem — including Bryan Mata (who
finished the year in DoubleA), Thad
Ward (High A), and perhaps Tanner
Houck (who relieved in Triple A, but
is getting readyto start in the Arizo-
na Fall League)— the team’s strug-
gles to replaceEovaldi and othersin
the rotation this year suggest an ab-
senceof reliable big league-ready
starting depth,at least at the begin-
ningof 2020.
The Red Sox are clinging to opti-
mismwhenit comesto the state of
their rotation. That their two highest-
paid rotation members will finish the
year withoutpitching, and that their
third has never in 2019beenable to
replicate the dazzling performance
he showed at the end of 2018, the
teaminsists — hopes? — is not cause
foralarm.
“Thereare not too many red flags
in the situations that will be, like,
‘We’re not going to count on these
guysnext year,’ ” said manager Alex
Cora.
Price, Sale,and Eovaldi served as
the rotation anchors of a World Se-
ries run in 2018,and the notionof a
reboundby all three in 2020can’t be
dismissed out of hand.
Whenhealthy in 2019, Price
showedelite commandthat still al-
lowedhim to navigate lineups care-
fullyand successfully.The procedure
to remove a cyst should address the
issuethat has sidelinedhim for the
last third of the season.
“We needthis guy healthy, ready
to go, and I thinkthis is the best
movefor the player and obviously for
the organization,” said Cora.

2020.
The fact that he still struck out
batters at one of the highest rates in
the big leagues suggests that his in-
consistency may have been the sort of
one-year aberration that can befall
even Hall of Fame-caliber pitchers.
Eovaldi’s armstrength remains
elite. And so, witha full, healthy off-
season, the righthanderhas a chance
to reestablish himself as a solid mid-
rotation option.
That, of course, is the glass-half-
full view. But thereare plenty of prec-
edentsto suggest that the Red Sox
can’t simply rely on best-case scenari-
os. In Price, Sale, and Eovaldi, the
Red Sox have madetheirmost ag-
gressivelong-termrotation invest-
mentssincethe beginningof this de-
cade, whenthey committed hun-
dreds of millionsof dollarsto
Daisuke Matsuzaka,John Lackey,
and Josh Beckett.
That trio endured a steadydecline
in bothhealthandperformance
whiletogether, resultingin negative
returnson investmentin 2012that
threatened to choke the roster for
years— untilthe Dodgers ex machi-
na bailout that August, whichinclud-
ed taking on the finalyearsof Beck-
ett’s deal,gave the Sox a reboot.
Of course, part of that rebootwas
also achieved in the surprise champi-
onship seasonof 2013thanksto
bouncebacks of Jon Lester, Lackey,
and Clay Buchholz— pitcherswho
wereeitherinjuredor performedbe-
low career norms in 2012.
As much as the Red Sox needto
remainmindfulof the riskspresent-
ed by the current state of the rota-
tion,thereis also evidence that pitch-
ers withtrack recordsof success can
bounce back, bothindividually and
as a group.
That, of course, is the Red Sox’
desperate hope.Yet the uncertainty
surroundingthe rotationsuggests
that the organization is in needof a
different rotation depthmodel than
the one it pursuedentering 2019.
There is a chance that the team’s
well-compensated starters reclaim
the formthat they’ve showneither
for most of their careers (Sale and
Price) or in somewhat recent glimps-
es (Eovaldi). But the Red Sox can ill-
afford to bet next season on the pre-
sumption of rotation health without
preparing for the possibility that the
2019 season represents a flashing red
warninglightthat will extendinto
the team’s future.
