New York Yankees pitcher CC
Sabathia is getting set to close his
career as a reliever.
Manager Aaron Boone said be-
fore Friday night’s game against
Toronto that Sabathia will work
out of the bullpen next week as the
AL East champions prepare for the
playoffs.
The 39-year-old left-hander has
pitched in relief only once in his 19-
season career, going 1^1 ⁄ 3 innings in a
deciding Game 5 loss to Detroit in
the 2011 AL Division Series.
Etc.
Washington Nationals man-
ager Dave Martinez has rejoined
the team following a heart pro-
cedure that caused him to a miss a
three-game series at St. Louis. The
54-year-old was back in the dugout
Friday, four days after a cardiac
catheterization. ... Don Mattingly
will be back for a fifth season as the
Miami Marlins’ manager in 2020.
His contract announced Friday is
for two years plus a mutual option
for 2022.

second rookie to reach 50 homers.
CARDINALS 2
CUBS 1
Yadier Molina had three of St. Louis’
four hits, including a two-run single for
the Cardinals. Chicago has totaled

ORIOLES 5
MARINERS 3
Aaron Brooks followed opener Richard
Bleier with seven one-hit innings, and

to Anthony Santander and Hanser
Alberto in five innings.
BLUE JAYS 4
YANKEES 3
Justin Smoak’s two-run homer in the
seventh helped Toronto win its fifth in

leg buckled. He is thought to be OK.
RAYS 5

fourth inning, Yoan Moncada also went
deep for Chicago and Tim Anderson

American League batting title.
INDIANS 5
