ufficiently advanced technology – as Arthur C.
Clarke once said – is indistinguishable from
magic. On the most magical night of the year,
sufficiently advanced technology has to stand in
for those of us not naturally imbued with magical
tendencies. The technology doesn’t have to be
particularly advanced (though it can be), it just
has to be deployed in unusual and unfamiliar

ways, and this is what we as makers are particularly adept at.
There’s a huge range of hardware options for creating unique
looks and embedding light, sounds, and movement in your
costumes. You can use almost any platform and fabrication
techniques you feel comfortable with to create your own
outfit. This is a chance to have fun, push the limits of your
knowledge, and show off your skills to friends and family. There
are opportunities at every skill level, from adding a few lights
or 3D-printed parts, to huge custom-built costumes – you just
have to decide what fits your time, budget, and skill level, then
get making.
When this magazine first appears on the shelves, there’ll be
42 days to get your outfit together. If you’ve already started,
then great. Perhaps the next few pages will give you some
ideas on how to enhance your get-up. If you’re still planning,
don’t worry; there’s still time. Let’s take a look at what some
other makers have made to give you some inspiration. Get
making and get spooky!
