From there, “inga” became
“enga”, just as “milk”
has become, at least in
my “children’s” speech,
“melk”. (I haven’t heard
“mook” in years.)

correct pronunciation of
Māori place names.

ECLECTIC DREAMS
Bill Ralston speculates that
if the entire vehicle fleet
became electric, we might
require one or two new
Clyde dams to power it
(Life, September 7).
Not so. I have a small
(2kWh) solar-power system
on my roof that in a year
generates enough electricity
to drive my EV 18,000km.
Most EVs are charged at
night when there is a large
surplus of generating capac-
ity. In future, when EVs are
common, their batteries
could be used to feed power
into the national grid at
times of peak demand,
reducing the need to con-
struct expensive “peaker”
power stations.

I have driven diesel cars for
20 years and I will continue
to do so. Why? Because,
soon, biodiesel will be
available, a fuel much more
eco-friendly than others.
