MATERIALS


� Oven-bake polymer clay (such as
Super Sculpey brand)
� Wire
� Toothpicks
� Two 2^1 ∕ 2 -inch segments of^1 ∕ 8 -inch
wooden dowel
� Crafts glue
� Acrylic paint: black, white,
light orange, orange
� Artists brushes
� 2-inch foam half ball
� Extra-fine glitter: black
� Scrap of black string or
embroidery floss
� Orange polka-dot scrapbook paper
�^3 ∕ 8 -inch-diameter pom-pom: black
� Tinsel garland: black


MAKE THE BIRD AND PUMPKIN


Knead a piece of polymer clay to soften.
Referring to photo, opposite below, form
the clay into a 3-inch-long bird. Knead a
second ball of clay. Divide the ball in half
and form each half into a fl at teardrop-
shape wing. Press wings onto sides of bird.
Knead and roll a small piece of clay into
a 1^1 ∕ 2 -inch-diameter ball and fl atten the top
and bottom for a pumpkin. Using the end
of a wire, poke two small holes through one
fl at side about halfway into pumpkin. Use a
toothpick to poke a hole through the beak.
Dab crafts glue onto one end of each
dowel segment. Push glued ends about

(^1) ∕ 2  inch into bottom of bird for legs.
Following manufacturer’s instructions,
bake the clay bird and pumpkin; let cool.
Paint bird and legs black; let dry. Mix
black with a small amount of white to make
dark gray. Brush dark gray on the head,
wings, and belly; let dry. Paint cheek circles
using light orange; let dry.
Using black, paint an eye overlapping each
cheek. Using white and a toothpick, dot the
eyes. Paint the beak and inside of hole black.
Paint white stripes on the legs. Let dry.
Paint the pumpkin orange; paint the top
and bottom black. Paint jack-o’-lantern
eyes, nose, and mouth using black; let dry.
Paint white highlights on the eyes and nose.
Mix a small amount of black with water. Use
the mixture to lightly paint pumpkin ridges.


FINISH THE FIGURE


Paint foam half ball black. Dab crafts glue
on the ends of the legs and push the legs
into the half ball. Brush crafts glue on foam
base and sprinkle with black glitter; let dry.
Thread black string through bird’s beak.
Dab glue in each pumpkin hole and use wire
to push string ends into holes.
Roll a 4-inch square of scrapbook paper
into a cone; glue. Trim the ends. Glue the
hat on the head. Glue the pom-pom to hat
top and black garland around base; let dry.
