Graveyard Dance

MATERIALS


FOR ONE ORNAMENT


Drill with drill bits
4-inch-long papier-mâché coffin
box lid
Assorted artists brushes
Acrylic paint: orange, green, purple,
black, off-white, metallic gold,
apricot, pale blue, lavender, pale yellow
1-inch wooden ladybug split (head)
1^1 ∕ 4 -inch wooden split egg (body)
Fine-tip permanent marking pen: black
Glue: wood, crafts, fabric
Artists eraser
Clear acrylic spray finish: matte
Black glass glitter
1-inch length of^3 ∕ 8 -inch-wide black-
and-white striped ribbon
2-inch length of^3 ∕ 16 -inch-wide rust
ombré silk ribbon
Bakers twine: black-and-white


ASSEMBLE THE COFFIN


Using a drill bit slightly larger than the
diameter of the bakers twine, drill two
holes about^1 ∕ 4 inch apart into top center
edge of the coffi n box lid.
Paint the inside of the coffi n orange,
green, or purple. Paint the outside and top
edges of coffi n black; let dry.

PAINT THE FIGURE


Paint the wooden lady bug split and the
wooden split egg off -white; let dry.
Referring to photos, below left and
right, draw mouth and teeth using a fi ne-
tip permanent black marking pen. Paint
outlines of nose and eyes using black.
Paint eyes desired colors. Paint nose black.
Paint pupils black. Add metallic-gold eye
highlights. Paint cheek circles using apricot.
Shade mouth using pale blue.
Use wood glue to adhere head and body
inside coffi n lid near the top. Leave a

(^1) ∕ 4 -inch gap between head and body for
bow tie; let dry.
Referring to photos, use a pencil to
draw arms and legs inside coffi n box. Paint
over pencil lines using pale blue and then
paint lines again using off -white; let dry.
Use artists eraser to clean up any pencil
marks. Draw rib cage using black marking
pen. Shade rib cage using pale blue. Seal
ornament using clear acrylic spray; let dry.


FINISH THE ORNAMENT


Brush the box edges with crafts glue.
Sprinkle with black glass glitter. Shake off
excess and let dry.
Tie rust ombré silk ribbon around center
of the striped ribbon to make a bow tie.
Knot and trim ends as desired. Use fabric
glue to adhere bow tie between the head
and body.
Thread a 10-inch length of bakers twine
through the holes in coffi n and tie ends into
a knot for a hanging loop.
