T

he impact of Donald Trump’s “America
First” policy is becoming all too clear.
The US president has both threatened
and imposed tariffs on a wide range
of imports from other countries —
China in particular. Trump believes
that such tariffs can protect US
industries, increase growth and improve his
prospects of getting re-elected as president
in November 2020. But as predicted by many
experts, the tariffs have led to retaliation by
China and created heightened economic
uncertainty. Our cover feature by Eamonn
Fitzgerald looks at the battle between the US
and China for global economic and politi-
cal supremacy — a battle whose outcome is
highly unpredictable (pp. 14–27).

Some of the most important questions fac-
ing any organization are how decisions are
made, who is responsible for making them
and whether effective action follows these
decisions. In the sixth part of our special
series on leadership, Bob Dignen provides
tips for optimizing your decision-making
processes (pp. 38–45).

PS: In the next issue of Business Spotlight, we
start a new series of collectable inserts of
essential business vocabulary. For more
details, see pages 36–37.
