2.1 Positive and Normative Statements


LO 1


A key to the success of scientific inquiry lies in separating positive
statements about the way the world works from normative statements
about how one would like the world to work.
Normative statements involve value judgments and cannot be
disproven. Positive statements, at least in principle, can be disproven
with an appeal to evidence.
