Comparison table
More a case of outright revolution than mere evolution, the D500 has set a new benchmark
for enthusiast-level D-SLRs, while the D5 represents a significant step up from the D4s...
rate that’s traditionally used by
movie cameras.
What’s interesting about
4K video is the additional
processing power required, and
this has a knock-on effect on
lower resolutions. Interestingly,
though, Nikon does not seem to
have leveraged this power to get
faster frame rates at lower
resolutions. The D5 and D
can capture Full HD
(1920x1080) video at 60/
frames per second for a 2x
slow-motion effect, but so
can existing Nikons like the
D7200. It would have been
really good to have seen
more powerful slow
motion modes – other
devices are capable of
them. The humble iPhone
6S, for example, can
capture standard HD video
(1280x720 pixels) at 240
frames per second, for an
amazing 8x slow motion effect.
ISO vs VR:
which is best?
There are occasions when you
can rely on Nikon’s VR (Vibration
Reduction) lenses to get you
sharp shots in low light, rather
than bumping up the ISO. There
are other times when it’s not
going to help you at all. That’s
because you’re combatting two
types of movement. If your
subject is static, the only
movement you have to worry
about is camera movement, and
the lens’s VR system will help
bring that under control. If
you’re photographing a moving
subject, VR isn’t going to do a
thing (apart from steadying the
camera). The only way to freeze
subject movement is with faster
shutter speeds, and that’s when
there is no substitute for a
higher ISO.
