Our pro’s verdict...^
Kaitlin did extremely well.
She quickly grasped that you
have to concentrate on the
focusing, and really lock the
focus tracking in, before you
start shooting. After only a few practice runs
where everything was out of focus, she
nailed a good proportion of perfectly sharp
action shots. In her Shot of the Day, Jester is
frozen at just the right moment to fill the
frame, without being so close to the lens that
he goes out of focus. He is also captured ‘on
the up’ with front paws off the ground, and
his expression is happy and appealing. Off
to one side, Roxy fills the space without any
overlapping. It’s a real winner!

Our Apprentice says...
Before my shoot with Adrian, I
didn’t realise just how involved
dog photography is. As Adrian
commented ‘You’re a sports
photographer, but with dogs’,
and he’s right. I’m much more aware now that
focusing should be my primary concern when
shooting dogs in action – and that can be
trickier to get right than it seems. Adrian’s
advice on cutting down the use of other
settings (especially leaving the camera in
aperture-priority mode and using Auto ISO)
has certainly help me concentrate more on
capturing the moment, rather than worrying
too much about settings. I can’t wait to go to
the local park with my own dog and try out all
these great tips and tricks!
