Synchronised
Swimmer
Pauline Pentony

With its emphasis
on posing, plus
its flamboyant lifts
and throws against
a backdrop of water
droplets, synchronised
swimming makes an
ideal subject, as our
winning image shows.
The restricted colour
palette – bright red and
skintones against a black
background – makes for
a very striking image.

Leading the Pack
Peter Paterson

This shot stood
out for a number of
reasons. First there’s the
way the four cyclists are
lined up within the frame,
taking up most of it, but
still allowing you to see
some context. Then
there’s the wide f/2.8
aperture, which blurs out
not just the spectators
but the trailing riders.
And finally, there’s the
glorious spray from the
teeming rain!

Pure Speed
Gerd Moors

The panning
technique here is
so good the car looks as
though it’s motionless.
The only par t of it that is
obviously moving is its
wheels. While panning
will blur the background
in any photo, the lack of
adverts means the wall
behind the car smooths
out into a painterly stripe
of pure green. Superb!
