August).Whenmyfathermovedinto

a carehomeI becamethecustodian

of 1,000sof transparenciesand

negatives– sometakenbyhisfather

in thelate1800s.Manyof thelatter

wereonglasshalfplates,withthe

gelatinbeginningtopeeloff.Someof

theseearlyplateswereof historical

interestastheyhadbeentakenin

Chinawhenmygrandfatherhadbeen

a missionaryat thetimeof theBoxer

Rebellion,duringwhichtimeboth

mygrandparentswerecapturedand

sentencedtodeath.Fortunatelyfor

metheygota last-minutereprieveas

mygrandmotherwaspregnantwith

myfatherat thetime!Theabove

imageis allegedlya shot,takenI

suspectcirca1890,showinglocals

readinga decreethat‘pigtails’were

tobebanned.

I managedtorestoreandscanthem

• reversingthenegativesintopositives.
  I didlikewisewithmyfather’splates
  (takenona Thornton-PickardSLR)
  and some of his prints and 35mm

transparenciesfromlater.Thenext

taskwastocreatea ‘Thisis YourLife’

videousingPicturestoExewith

voiceoverandmusic.I tookthistothe

carehome(witha portablevideo

player)onChristmasDayasan‘extra‘

Christmaspresent.Hissheerdelight

• heliterallyweptwithjoy– madethe
  effortsoworthwhile,especiallyashe
  diedtwomonthslater.
  Then,of course,I hadtheproblem
  of those1,000sof transparencieshe
  hadtakenin laterlife.Mainlyof garden
  flowersandpeopleI wasunableto
  identify.ReluctantlyI hadtotakemost
  of thepicturestothetip,forwhichI felt
  veryguilty.
  Somyadvicewouldbetoput
  ‘important’imagesontoa DVD– with
  captionsora commentary.Provided
  thatyouhavea scannerandcomputer
  thisis a relativelyeasyprocedure.
  Therearenumerousfreeprograms
  capableof producingtheseandonce
  doneyouandyourheirswillhavea
  permanentandunderstandable record
  of yourfamilyhistory.
