andI cantransferthe
imagesquickly.I usea
SonyXQDUSBadapter
forG series.I havemacOS
10.14.5andNikonView
NX-i1.3.3.withNikon
Transfer2 version2.13.2.
I wouldrecommend
upgradingtothelatest
Nikonsoftware.I haven’t
triedtransferringimages
toa MacBookAirusing
theXQDcardsand
adapterbutit allworksfine
in everyotherrespect.

Sexistlanguage?
Therewasmuchtoenjoy
whenreadingPeter
Dench’sarticleaboutthe
amazingHultonArchive
(Raidersof thelostarchives,
24 August).I was,
however,shockedbyhis
repeateddescriptionsof
thearchivecurator,
MelanieHough.I asked
myselfwhether,hadthe
curatorbeena man,would
hehavegivenussuch
personaldetails?Didwe
needtoknowthatherjaw
is strong,facefreckled,
gripfirmandblueeyes
imposing?Orthefactthat
she was ‘pushing her


tawnyhairbehinda
piercedearwithoutan
earring’.I sayno;wehave
noneedtoknowsuch
things.I amsurprisedthat
thisarticlewasprintedin
itspublishedformwhena
lookat theAPeditorial
teamshowsthatthe
majorityarewomen.Also
theregularcolumnBackin
theDayis notafraidto
taketotaskthesexist
portrayalofwomenin the
’60sand’70s.Bytheend
ofDench’sarticle,he
seemedtohavesteered
himselfawayfromthe
languageheusedearlier
in thearticle,onlytospoil
it yetagainbytellingus
thatMelanie‘softlyguides
mebackintotheopen’.I
don’tthinksuchwriting
hasa placein APtoday.

experiencesdeliveredby
film.Torecapturesome
of theexpectationand
hopewithintheconstraints
of severelyrestricted
numbersof exposures,
I boughta usedFujifilm
Instaxcamera,complete
witha coupleof 10
exposurefilmpacks.
Thelearningcurvewas
steepandexpensivebut,
thefunelementwasoff
thescaleforthefirsttime
sincegoingdigital!Highly
recommendedtherapy.

photobyMarkHeslington
takenin SaltwickBay.I
wouldliketoexpressmy
admirationfortheplanning
thatmusthavegoneinto
capturingtheimage.The
wetrockshelfsaroundthe
Nabareveryflat andoften
verywetandslippery.But
theyareonlyfullyexposed
at lowtide.Markmusthave
plannedtobetherewhen
thelowtidecoincidedwith
thesunset.Anexcellent
image,nodoubtproduced
byexcellentplanning.
Havingphotographed
aroundtheNabmyself,
Markwouldnothavehad
verylongbeforethetide
turned.Hereis a warning
toanyoneelse:keepan
eyeonyourwatchand
knowwhenthetideis due
toturn.Becauseit is easy
tobeonthewrongsideof
theheadlandwhen the
tiderushesin.

week we pay a visit to September 1985

A mixed bagofSunday Telegraph portraits from 1985

ASTHEcoversuggests,thisis anotherglamour
model-tasticfromtheAParchive,withanengrossing
featurecomparingthelifestylesof twomodels:
formerPage3 stalwartSamanthaFoxanda relative
newcomercalledJuliaHumphries.Samanthais still
knockingthemdeadat 53,whilewedida Google
searchforJuliaandsoonwishwehadn’t,asallthat
poppedupwasa backissueof a certain‘gentleman’s
magazine’forsaleonAmazon.
Movingswiftlyon,thisissuealsofeatureda more
highbrowpieceonportraitsfromtheSu ndayTelegraph
coloursupplement.Someof theimagesaregreat,
particularlythatof a mesmerisingportraitof Richard
Avedonorthatof MerlePark.Othersarelessso:the
torsoof spiky-haired’80siconLeslieAshmerginginto
whatlookslikea hipster’swoodenflooris probably
bestleftin thevault.Lastbutnotleast,therewasa
round-upof budgetzoomlenses,a usefulbeginner’s
guidetothedarkroom,anda featureonusing the
correct lighting for different situations.
