THELakeDistrictis fullof spectacularlocations,
thoughforsheerruggednessandremotenessthe
EskdaleValleytakessomebeating.AlfredWainwright

Lakeland’svalleys,descendsfromthehighestand
wildestmountainsin thedistricttothesandsof
Ravenglassin a swifttransitionfrombleakandcraggy
ridges,toverdantwoodlandsandpastureswateredby
a charmingriver.’
Thevalleyis notableforbeingoneof fewmajor
valleysin theLakeDistrictnottohaveitsownlake,
althoughseveraltarnsareperchedabovethevalley
sidesincludingDevokeWater,whichis thelargesttarn
in theLakeDistrict.
Locatedontheedgeof theNationalPark,thevalley
is linkedtoitsperhapsmoreillustriousneighbour,the
LangdaleValley,bytheinfamousHardknottand
WrynosePass.It’salsohometothehighestgroundin
England,theScafells,aswellasother850m-plus
peakslikeBowfell,EskPikeandCrinkleCrags.The
south-eastfacingaspectof theScafellsis probablyan
evenmorespectacularvistathanitsmorecommonly
seenviewfromtheever-popularWastwater.
Thevalleyhasa multitudeof placesyoucan
photograph,includingtheancientRomanFort,Stanley
Ghyllwaterfall,themanystreamsalongtheRiverEsk
astheywindtheirwayuptotheheadof thevalley,
DevokeWateronthenearbyBirkerFell,andthe
dramaticviewsacrosstotheScafellRangefrom
HardknottFellitself.
