Simon Roberts: Inscapes
Pallant House Gallery, Chichester, West
Sussex. Runs until 13 October. Free entry.
THIS exhibition includes photography, video and sound
by the well-known British landscape photographer,
Simon Roberts. Focusing on the locations surrounding
Petworth in Sussex where the painter Ivon Hitchens
loved to work, the exhibition connects with the
gallery’s main summer show (‘Ivon Hitchens:
Space through Colour’).
Simon’s work explores how we experience
landscapes which are familiar to us, and is his first
series of work to feature landscapes which are
devoid of people. Speaking of his images, Simon says,
‘I was interested in immersing myself in the particular
landscapes around West Sussex where much of Ivon
Hitchens’s abstraction was rooted. I wanted to move
beyond just looking at the fabric of the landscape,
and explore ideas of the “modest beauty” of those
hinterland spaces.’Amy Davies

Berlin/London: The Lost
Photographs of Gerty Simon
The Wiener Library, Russell Square, London.
Runs until 15 October 2019. Entrance is free.
YOU’VE still got a little while left to see the Wiener
Library’s summer exhibition, which focuses on the
work of German Jewish photographer Gerty (Gertrud)
Simon. It is part of the Insiders/Outsiders festival:
a nationwide event celebrating refugees from Nazi
Europe and their impact on British culture.
The show features many of Gerty’s original prints
from the 1920s and 1930s. She pointed her lens at
political and artistic fi gures in Weimar Berlin, including
Max Liebermann, Albert Einstein and Kurt Weill. In the
1930s, she escaped the Nazis and became a refugee
in Britain. Re-establishing her studio she photographed
fi gures including Aneurin Bevan and Dame Peggy
Ashcroft. This project aims, for the fi rst time in 80
years, to bring into focus her extraordinary work.
