An exhibition celebrating some of the best

women’s photography has been organised

strength to strength, findsAmy Davies

O

ver the past year-and-
a-bit, the SheClicks
Facebook group, set up
by former AP Technical
Editor Angela Nicholson, has grown
enormously. From its beginnings
with just a handful of members,
at the time of writing, almost
5,000 women have joined together
to discuss, celebrate and share
their photography.
With so many active members,
Angela wanted to set up an
exhibition to display some of the
fantastic work uploaded to the group
daily. Angela says, ‘An exhibition was
one of my goals for SheClicks, so I
was delighted when Olympus UK
offered to sponsor one at the After
Nyne gallery in Holland Park.’

Making the cut
An open call was put out for
submissions for the exhibition, with
just 50 coveted spaces up for grabs.
To help manage the submission
and selection process, Photocrowd
offered its services (you may be
familiar with Photocrowd from our
APOY competition). Over 2,000
images were entered, giving the
judges a tough job to whittle it
down to the required amount.

A group of ten judges helped
to choose the images, including
AP’s own Tracy Calder (Acting
Technique Editor) and me, Amy
Davies (co-Features Editor). Other
judges included Sony Ambassador
Kate Hopewell-Smith, freelance
photographer Astrid McGechan,
Georgina Pavelin from Olympus,
and Angela Nicholson herself.
The images selected represent a
fantastic cross-section of different
genres, as Angela explains: ‘The
brief for the exhibition was open,
which meant we got a very wide
spread of subjects and techniques.
That made the judges’ task harder,
but we were all keen for the
exhibition to show the range
of photography that’s done by
SheClicks members.
‘We could easily have created a
great exhibition with ten times
the number of prints, and it was
heartbreaking to have to exclude
some of the images that were
submitted. However, it was
wonderful to be able to break
the news to the 50 photographers
whose images are going to feature
in the exhibition. A few even
messaged me to let me know that
they’d cried with happiness.’

The SheClicks exhibition can be viewed at the After Nyne Gallery, 10 Portland Road, Notting Hill,
London W11 4LA. It is open Wednesday, 25 September–Tuesday, 1 October (closed on Sundays and Mondays).
Entrance is free and all are welcome to visit. For more information about SheClicks, visit sheclicks.net, and
