You don’t need to have seen any Mexican wrestling movies for this goofy
spoof of the genre by Jared Hess, director of Napoleon Dynamite, to reduce
you to a quivering pile of giggles. Jack Black plays a lowly friar at a rural
orphanage who decides to transform himself into masked wrestler Nacho
Libre in order to pay for more tasty meals for his wards. Like the Marx
Brothers, this is comedy that revels in its own sheer silliness, such as fighting
off street toughs armed with nothing but corn-on-the-cob. 2006, 12, 92MIN

Sigourney Weaver and Cillian Murphy’s
professional sceptics go about their
business of exposing fake paranormal
phenomena until Robert De Niro’s
legendary blind psychic knocks the
pair’s mission off course. This twisty
psychological thriller is slickly edited,
eerily atmospheric and superbly acted
by its leading trio, and, despite an
overwrought and over-explained finale,
director Rodrigo Cortés’s sleight of hand
is spookily good. 2012, 15, 113MIN

This rousing final screen adventure for the
original crew of the starship Enterprise is,
perhaps unsurprisingly, tinged with
sadness. The plot ranks among the best
of their big-screen voyages as Captain
Kirk is accused of murdering a Klingon
ambassador and sentenced to life on
a frigid prison planet. David Warner is
suitably noble as the Klingon envoy, and
Kim Cattrall plays a Vulcan lieutenant on
the Enterprise. 1991, PG, 109MIN

Disney’s 50th animated movie gives the
Brothers Grimm fairy tale of Rapunzel a
makeover with a delightful musical that
tweaks and teases the original story just
enough for a modern audience. Heroine
Rapunzel (voiced by Mandy Moore),
here transformed into a princess, is
abducted at birth by wicked enchantress
Mother Gothel (Broadway star Donna
Murphy) and locked in a tower, until
rascally thief Flynn Rider (Shazam’s
Zachary Levi) turns up. 2010, PG, 100MIN

Four Horsemen are back for a sequel to
2013’s flashy heist thriller. Here, the
quartet – Jesse Eisenberg, Woody
Harrelson, Dave Franco and new recruit
Lizzy Caplan – are coerced by Daniel
Radcliffe’s dodgy tech tycoon into pulling
off the theft of a new data-mining
device. The feints and flourishes can’t
disguise the fact that there’s little of
substance underneath. 2016, 12, 129MIN

Adapting three stories by Canadian author Alice Munro, this visually
sumptuous, emotionally resonant melodrama from Spanish maestro Pedro
Almodóvar finds Emma Suarez’s middle-aged Julieta (played as a younger
woman by Adriana Ugarte) looking back at the tangled and sometimes tragic
events that have shaped her life. Switching back and forth between past and
present, Almodóvar delivers some unexpected twists and turns along the way.
The mood is sombre, but the film still looks gorgeous. Subtitled. 2016, 15, 99MIN

PREMIERE Aiming to recapture the
mismatched buddy dynamic of such
films as Midnight Run and 48 Hrs, Ryan
Reynolds and Samuel L Jackson play
chalk ’n’ cheese frenemies in this action
comedy. Reynolds is a finicky professional
bodyguard and Jackson is the assassin he
must escort from prison to give evidence
in court. The film is far too scattershot
to live up to its movie precursors, but
the stars’ chemistry keeps the show
on the road. 2017, 15, 115MIN
