This detailed render of a katana is the work of
Game Art and Animation student Benjamin
MacDonald. “My favourite part of creating
the image was probably the modelling. I love
working in ZBrush and seeing how much detail I
can get out of the high poly,” he says.
The base model was created in Maya before
ZBrush’s NoiseMaker tool allowed Benjamin to
create the tiling pattern, wraps and engravings
that can be seen on the finished product. “The
other technique that I used was Ben Bolton’s
Proboolean workflow,” he adds “This was

mainly used for the loop on the scabbard and the
opening for the blade.”
Benjamin says that his colleagues and the
Game Art community at Champlain College
are his biggest inspirations. “Soon we will all
graduate, which will be one of the saddest and
happiest times in my life. Knowing that we will
never be able to share memories like this again
but that we will all be moving toward our goals
of becoming artists in the industry.”
