scale in Quill
Scale in Quill is
basically limitless. Get
to know how it works
by playing around as
much as possible. You
can zoom in and out
by holding the right or
left grip button while
pressing up or down on
either thumbstick. You

scene. By doing this step you can
also make the aircraft appear more
detailed than it really is, exactly
as you would do with a traditional
painting. I mostly use the Ribbon
brush for this step, combined with
the Line tool. Now it's just a matter
of tracing the contours of the ship,
and adding details as you see fit.
Since there's no specularity in Quill
you'll have to paint that in as well.
So what I do is I take the Recolour
tool, I set it to the Add blend mode,
and I paint in the highlights. In the
example I've included both the
repainted model and the original so
you can see the difference.

With a symmetrical model like the
fighter aircraft we’re making here,
it makes sense to mirror the details
we’re adding, at least to a certain
extent. The first way is if you want
to mirror all of the layer’s content.
To do this, just duplicate the layer
under the Layers menu, press the +
(Transform) icon next to the layer,
then go to the Transform toolbar
and select Mirror on X/Y or Z axis.
You might have to change the
gimbal position by turning on the
‘Show gimbal’ option.

Once you see the gimbal, you
can change its position by left-
trigger-dragging the little white dot
in the middle of the gimbal to where
you want it to be.
Once you’re happy with the
mirror, go back to Layers and
deselect the layer + symbol. This
way you’re back to moving the
whole scene and not just the layer.

The second way to mirror is if
you want to mirror only a selection.
To do this, make the selection, go
to the Tools menu, select ‘Copy to
new layer’ and then repeat the steps
from method one. Afterwards, you
can merge the mirror down into
the original layer, either from the
Merge option in the Layers menu,
or by pushing down on your left
thumbstick. By the way, you can also
add a new layer by pushing up on
the left thumbstick.

The basics of animation in
Quill are pretty straightforward.
Under the Animation tab, you’ll
find options to add keyframes,
change fps, copy keyframes, play
animation and so on. To add empty
keyframes without going through

the Animation tab, just push down
on the right trigger (push on the
middle of it so that you push the
trigger a little into the controller).
A small vibration indicates that the
keyframe is added. Hold it pressed
down to add multiple keyframes. To
copy a keyframe, hold down the left
trigger and push down on the right
thumbstick. All of those functions
are also accessible through the
Animation tab.
And that’s all there is to it!
(Almost). Quill is frame-by-frame
animation with the added benefits
of 3D and great selection, copy and
duplication tools.
And I’ve saved the best feature
for last. Push play and you can draw,
colour, nudge and so on while the
animation is still running! Under the
tool settings you can then control
the duration of those animated
brush strokes.

Using the technique explained
above, we can now start bringing
the scene to life. I make a new layer
and select the Capped Cylinder
brush. I make sure that the opacity
is set to about 50%, and that the
brush is set to use trigger sensitivity
