he workflow I teach in the Futuristic

Character Design course is, in short,

the same workflow I developed while

working on Rupert Sanders’ Ghost in the Shell.

It aims to solve unique design challenges with

consistency and speed by using everything

from loose sketching techniques to advanced

final render procedures.

In this tutorial, we will first begin by

deconstructing our brief, planning our project,

and gathering our references.

From there, I will show you how I use

shapes, form and lighting to create small,

story-driven thumbnails to frame and elevate

our character.

We will then select our most compelling

thumbnail and push it further by examining

elements we weren’t able to explore during

the thumbnail phase. Here, we can start

experimenting by adding more details to our

character and her armour. The goal here is

to answer as many questions as possible vis-

a-vis our design.

Finally, again in the interest of time, I

will show you how to use photobashing
