Iggy Pop
The proto-punk pioneer and former
Stooges frontman is evidently in reflective
mood on Free, his 18th studio album,
which nonetheless weaves a myriad of
musical influences, including jazz, rock and
electronic. Pop himself has described the
release as a reaction to his hectic touring
schedule following his previous studio
album, 2016’s Post Pop Depression.
FIVE FACTS:
- Iggy Pop’s real name is James Newell
Osterberg Jr. - Pop has been credited with popularizing
the “stage-dive” in live music. - In announcing the new album, Pop
admitted to feeling “drained” in the wake of
recent touring, adding: “I wanted to be free.”
This inspired the title of the album and its
lead single. - That single was released on July 18, 2019,
before the second and third singles “James
Bond” and “Sonali” followed on August 14
and 28 respectively. - The track “We Are the People” includes
lyrics penned by Lou Reed in 1970 but not
published until 2018, about five years after
the Velvet Underground songwriter’s death.
