When on vacation, I often find myself
drawing the plants and wildlife that
are unique to the area I’m visiting.
I’m very inspired by nature, and I
love looking for the similarities and
differences between my own home
and the places I go.
I don’t necessarily draw every day
while on vacation, but I’ll often be
jotting down ideas or sketching things
inspired by whatever I’ve seen. Some
days, I just soak up what’s in front
of me, tucking it away in my head for
inspiration later. I usually bring a small
Moleskine sketchbook with me. It’s
just the right size and fits perfectly in
my backpack. I also love that it has an
interior pocket, so I can store things
like ticket stubs and pressed flowers.
This illustration is from when I
visited Ireland last winter. I remember
getting out of the car at Maam Cross,
a crossroads in Connemara, County
Galway, looking over the fields and
being overwhelmed by how beautiful
it was. I wanted to capture that
emotion in my sketchbook when
I drew these pages.

Tip: Drawing on vacation is about
capturing the spirit of your travels
and it doesn’t have to be a perfect,
finished piece of art. >
