Make two
With yarn A and 5mm
hook, 32ch.
Row 1: Change to 4.5mm hook,
1ch, 1dc in second ch from hook,
1dc in each of next 30ch, turn
- 31 sts.
Row 2: 1ch, 31dc.
Rows 3–49: Rep Row 2.
Measure rectangle against
the hot water bottle to check
length reaches top of shoulders/
beginning of neck. Finish off and
neaten tails and make another
exactly the same size.
Following the chart, work surface
cross stitch on RS of one of
the rectangles.
The design starts on Row 11.
When cross stitch design is
completed, place rectangles WS
tog and attach yarn to the bottom
right corner.
Join the two pieces by working
dc evenly up the long side of the
rectangle, work 3dc in same place
at top corner, 1dc in each of next
9 sts across top. Fasten off.Repeat join on other side of the

Rnd 3: 1ch, 10dc, 2dc in 2ch-sp
(forms buttonhole), 7dc, 2dc in
2ch-sp, 1dc in each st around, sl
st in 1ch to join.
Rnd 4: 1ch, 62dc, sl st in 1ch
to join.
Fasten off and neaten tail.
Sew buttons onto inside of
hot water cosy in line with
buttonholes.

With yarn B and 5mm hook, 81ch.
Row 1: Change to 4.5mm hook,

1dc in each ch, turn – 80dc.
Rows 2 & 3: 1ch, 80dc, turn.
Fasten off and neaten tails.Using yarn A make two small
pom-poms. Ensure length of yarn
used to secure middle of pom-
pom is long enough to sew them
to the ends of the scarf.
Trim pom-poms to make sure
they are the same size and a neat
regular shape.
Finished pom-poms measure
approx 3cm/1¼in after trimming.Insert hot water bottle from the
bottom of the cosy, fasten buttons,
tie scarf around neck to finish.
