08 Inside Crochet
Milli Abrams lives in London with her
husband and teenage son, a few minutes’
walk from her shop and seconds from
Richmond Park.
Her life was very di erent before Tribe
Yarns, travelling as an accountant for 21
years, sailing round the world with her
husband and son, then aged seven, and
working for Sir Richard Branson at Necker
Island. Then she had a change of heart.
“Hurricane Irma came and destroyed
our island home. I realised that the most
important thing for us was to be close
to our son who was moving to London.
When we got back, I decided to follow
my passion!” And Tribe Yarns was born.
Milli’s mum taught her to knit when
she was about six “and it was love at fi rst
try! Maybe it was because I was such an
active child – it soothed me. I’ve been
doing it ever since.” She’s now learning
to crochet and to weave.
Milli’s passion for indie yarn started
years ago. “When we lived in the
Canadian Rockies after our son was born
I discovered high quality, indie-dyed
yarn. It taught me a lot about quality
over quantity, and you can really feel the

di erence when you’re spending time
with good fi bres, from animals that are
treated well, and responsible dyeing
and processing. Same with notions and
haberdashery. I will only stock stu that
I love and covet. And it must be ethically
produced, both in terms of animal welfare
but also in terms of the humans behind
the products.”
Milli’s sassy, fun-loving spirit radiates
around her shop. “The most important
thing to me is to empower people to
choose whatever brings them the most
joy,” she says. “To inspire them to push a
little past comfort zones to try new things
and to have fun with that! My vision for
the shop is a place where you can kick o
your shoes – heck, take your bra o if you
want to, and just be yourself...”
Can she highlight a few treasured
yarns? “A current favourite squeeze are
the gorgeous yarns by Artyarns. Our
bestsellers right now are many of our
indie-dyed yarns like Black Elephant
and Qing Fibre. The self-striping yarns
by Uneek always do well – they are so
beautifully dyed. For thicker, sweater
quantity yarn, my absolute fave is Scout
