Explore by bike
Cycling across Mauritius’ scenic
southern region is not only spectacular
and a great way to meet locals, but it is
also good exercise. There are half and full
day itineraries with the option of lunch.

The route from Belle Ombré to Souillac is
recommended. electrobikemauritius.com

Discover tea culture
Bois Cheri is one of three plantations
on the island. Home to a processing plant
and tea shop, this is the perfect stop to
indulge in Mauritius’ tasty sweet teas while
enjoying views over the plantations.

Hike up Le Morne Brabant
During French and British rule, slaves
used to run away to this mountain for
sanctuary. For this reason, Le Morne
Brabant is a highly symbolic place for
Mauritians. The site was declared a

UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008 and
now draws in small groups of experienced
hikers. The summit climb takes three to
four hours and the view is spectacular.

Join the Maha Sabha pilgrimage
Visit in early March and you may have
the opportunity to experience the largest
Hindu pilgrimage outside of India. The
Mauritius Maha Shivaratri festival sees
thousands of devotees walk from all
corners of the island to Ganga Talao, a
sacred lake at Grand Bassin, to celebrate
the Great Night of Lord Shiva. Grand
Bassin is open to visitors all year around.
