Seaweed saviour

Move over kale – there’s a new green

on the block. Not only does seaweed

pack a punch both nutritionally (think

salad, not fried!) and in skincare, but

seaweed farms also absorb carbon

and other nasties from the sea, as well

as providing protection and habitats

for aquatic life. It’s a dinner winner.

Happy feet

A new exercise programme helping senior
citizens improve their strength, memory
and wellbeing is being expanded to 130
sites across Singapore. Named ‘Happy’,
the programme aims to bring people
together to create a sense of community.
“Frailty and memory decline are two
aspects of ageing that are reversible,” says
associate professor Reshma Merchant,
Happy’s leader. “Our data shows that older
adults who participate in the programme
and are physically and mentally engaged
have better outcomes in both of these areas,
while 40% felt less lonely.” Let’s hope other
countries take note and follow suit.
