Skip vintage pieces.
It’s best to get new cribs,
sleepers and bassinets. Antique
items may look nice, but today’s
products meet much stricter
safety standards.
Pick the right
mattress.
Opt for a firm style that fits
your crib properly — meaning
there are no large gaps between
the mattress and the crib sides.
An easy check: If more than two of
your fingers fit on any side,
the mattress is too small.
Keep cribs bare.
Soft bedding and other items
can pose a serious risk. Remove
pillows, blankets, stuffed animals
and other toys when infants are
sleeping. The only thing that should
be on the mattress is a crib sheet
that fits securely enough that baby

Decorating a nursery can be fun, but you want to
be sure the space is as safe as it is chic. Here’s how:

BUILD THE BEST ROOM.

can’t pull the edges up. The sides
should be free too—no drapey quilts
or crib bumper pads, the sale of which
is now banned in Ohio, Maryland and
New York. To keep infants warm, use
a sleep sack, and always speak to
your doctor about when to introduce
blankets or pillows.
Adjust the bed.
When your child can pull herself
up to a standing position, move the
mattress to the lowest height. When
she can climb out or is over 35" tall, it’s
time to upgrade to a toddler bed.
Check your cords.
Cribs should be kept away from
windows, but if you can’t find another
spot, make sure there are no corded
coverings nearby. Our own line of
Good Housekeeping Blinds & Shades
has tons of cordless options and styles,
and is backed by the GH Seal warranty.

The FDA restricts the use of 12 ingredients or related com-
pounds in the products we use on our skin. As a result, many
brands are eliminating questionable ingredients in adult and baby
formulations to create safer products. GH Parenting Summit partner
Pipette has vowed not to use more than 2,000 potentially toxic or
irritating ingredients in their skincare products, and our Lab chemists
were still impressed by the line’s performance. LEARN MORE AT PIPETTEBABY.COM.

INTRODUCE PEANUTS EARLY.
The latest research shows it may be beneficial to
introduce the most common food allergies to babies
once solids are tolerated (around 6 months of age).
The American Academy of Pediatrics says this can
help reduce the risk of developing a peanut allergy.
Once you speak to your doctor, aim to include the
food about twice a week to maintain a tolerance.
For an easy intro, GH’s nutrition director suggests
using peanut puffs. Since they’re easily dissolvable,
they limit choking risk, and it’s easy to control portions.
