NEW BRUNSWICK

Home of high tides, saltwater
beaches and lobster rolls, New
Brunswick is also famous for
being the birthplace of North
America’s first female deep sea
captain. Captain Myrtle “Molly”
Kool grew up in a family of
mariners in Alma, N.B., and
expertly navigated the Bay of
Fundy’s difficult waters. After
obtaining her captain certificate
in 1939, she allegedly sent a
telegram home reading, “Call
me Captain from now on.” We
think that’s pretty kool.

FULL STEAM
AHEAD
A steamer isn’t only for smooth-
ing wrinkles on clothes! Use it
on mattresses, curtains, car seats,
sofas and pillows, followed by a
quick vacuum, to elminate dust
mites and other allergens. For
a heavy-duty household steamer,
we love this one by Rowenta, but
if you’re a novice, frequent travel-
ler or you’re tight on space, try
a portable version like this one
from Conair.

Gourmet G lossary
THE PUMPKIN A staple in the diets of early North
American settlers, this colourful fruit (because
it has seeds) is popping up in all kinds of foods
now —from lattes and beer to cookies and ice
cream. In this issue, we’ve paired it with a friend,
carrots, for a perfect ending to Thanksgiving
dinner. Find the recipe on page 110.
