Where to dine in

San Antonio
For fresh, organic, vegan brunching in a
cool, cute atmosphere, head to PHARM
TABLE downtown: “I reimagine tacos and
tamales with super foods, as my culinary
philosophy has always been based on the
idea that food heals us,” says chef
Elizabeth Johnson. pharmtable.com.

If you’re looking to eat something fast
and fun, make your way to SCHILO’S, a
century-old restaurant near the River Walk
that serves delicious German-Texan fare.

At lunchtime, opt for the SOUTHERLEIGH
BREWERY in Pearl and order fried
snapper throats—a part of the fish we
don’t see served often, but comes highly
recommended. southerleigh.com.

The perfect picnic dinner can be found
at ALAMO BBQ COMPANY. It’s a family-
friendly backyard atmosphere where
there’s a playground for the kids, live
music, chairs scattered around the garden
and a pro smoker that pumps out piles
of goodies, Texas-style.

Dine by candlelight at GWENDOLYN,
a romantic eatery headed by chef Michael
Sohocki, whose style reflects the height
of 19th-century Europe. More specifically,
cooking without electricity, as “with
industrialization came the loss of identity,”
he explains. One thing’s for sure, his
menu is original.

Mission Statement
In the early 1700s, Spain was expanding
its territory into the New World,
establishing five Franciscan missions in
San Antonio. The first of these missions,
The Alamo, situated in the heart of the
city pays homage to those who fought in
the Battle of the Alamo, including Davy
Crockett. The other four fortresses are
scattered along the river on the city’s edge.
They’re worth checking out for their
beautiful colonial architecture, the
mariachi mass celebrated at the San José
mission, and the acequias of the Espada
mission, ingenious irrigation ditches
conceived by the Spanish to bring water to
the fields and activate the mills.
