CRITICS’ CHOICE
THIS new sitcom from
the Benidorm creator
Derren Litten feels
like a drama at points,
but almost always
undercuts those lower-
key moments with a
joke — one is about
Jimmy Savile, so
it likes to shock.
It’s set among
the residents of
Scarborough on the
Yorkshire coast, mostly around
second-time couple Mike and
Karen (Jason Manford and
Catherine Tyldesley, pictured),
while the cast also includes
Stephanie Cole, Steve Edge
and Claire Sweeney. Mike and
Karen are having relationship
troubles in episode one, which
brings everyone together for
a night in the local pub and
karaoke spot, where the show
is at its warmest and funniest.
PICK OF THE DAY
DOUBLE ACT
Mortimer & Whitehouse:
Gone Fishing, 8pm, BBC2
SADLY, it’s the last of the series — but
happily, it’s a cracker as Bob and Paul
head to the River Ure in the Yorkshire
Dales, in search of grayling, and find
mostly great conversation instead. They
talk about plans for the future — Bob
wants to watch every TV show ever —
and re-enact his heart bypass in a pub.
RETIREES SITCOM
Hold The Sunset, 8.30pm, BBC1
ANNE REID’S Queenie (pictured) has
all the best lines in tonight’s series
finale, in which the day of Edith and
Phil’s wedding finally arrives — will
they get hitched without a hitch?
Theirs is not the only love story at play
here, for ‘exceptional twerp’ Roger is
falling hard for Georgie, and showing
signs of redemption in the process.
PLANT ADVICE
Gardeners’ World, 8.30pm, BBC2
MONTY DON is away, so we head back
to Adam Frost’s garden
for advice on pruning
overgrown evergreen
shrubs. Plus, Rachel de
Thame shows us how
to maintain containers
and extend their display
into the autumn.
CLEVER QUIZ
QI, 10pm, BBC2
AT THE start of a new
series of this reliably
delightful panel show,
the excellent Sandi
Toksvig welcomes
comedians Jason
Manford, Sarah Millican
and Loyiso Gola (pictured
with Alan Davies) to her
amusing arena of intellectual
curiosity. This is series ‘Q’,
which tonight stands for
‘Quirky’ — which could apply
to almost any episode.
