tle will be a damage-

limitation exercise. The

primary objective will be to

avoid any untimely mishaps

before heading to Japan for

the World Cup.

It won’t be like that for Mark

Wilson, though. This Test means a

lot to the temporarily exiled Falcons

flanker. The locals in the crowd at

St James’ Park will doubtless

reserve special acclaim for the

Cumbrian who spent years as a stal-

that they do. Italy at full strength

would be no match for Eddie Jones’s

side, and Conor O’Shea has named

a shadow Azzurri team, so the

Newcastle public are likely to be

treated to a points bonanza. The

away-from-home ‘hosts’ can expect

to fill their boots, while doing every-

thing possible to stay in one piece.

involve captain Owen Farrell or

Billy Vunipola — making his fourth

start in this warm-up phase —

being injured.

Those two are irreplaceable, but

Jones could do without any of his

players suffering 11th-hour scares.

The head coach is already going to

Japan with key men still in recovery

mode — Mako Vunipola, Jack

Nowell, Henry Slade and Jonathan

England just need to come through
