START on left with number given and follow instructions as you go across. In 30 seconds, beginners have to
complete their own challenge; intermediates have to complete their own challenge and the beginner’s;
advanced players have to complete their own challenge and the intermediate’s. SOLUTION BELOW

Playing Pairs, you decide to make a
competitive double, rather than bidding clubs,
so as not to risk missing a spade fit. What do you
do next when partner makes the feared response
in diamonds?
Of cOurse, if you’re a good Acol bidder, you will
have already prepared your rebid in the event of
partner not holding four spades — it was the risk
you were prepared to take when you doubled.
Now, you have to hope that partner is a thoughtful
and sound partner when you bid 3♣ — and you must
— because you are showing a stronger hand that you
actually hold.
A further bid in a new suit after partner has made
a minimum response isn’t absolutely forcing, but it is
highly invitational to bid on.
If West bids 3♦, either voluntarily making a jump
response or being forced by east raising hearts, you
must just hope he has a 5-or 6-card suit and pass. You
must not risk bidding 4♣, which could be suicidal.
In fact, south held ♠x ♥xxx ♦Qxxxxx ♣KJx, and
he raised clubs when the opponents competed with
3 ♥. 4♣ was doubled and, with trumps dividing 2-2,
declarer just lost a trick in each of the other suits.
