72 ASTRONOMY • SEPTEMBER 2017
- SOUTH OF THE BORDER
The stars of the constellation Crux
the Southern Cross glow brightly
at the upper left of this image. Its
bottommost star, Acrux (Alpha [α]
Crucis) lies next to an intensely dark
nebula called the Coalsack. On the
right, the spectacular Carina Nebula
(NGC 3372) glows intensely red.

- CAMERA SHY
Most amateurs consider M89 to be
just another boring elliptical galaxy,
so they don’t target it. As this image
proves, however, it’s anything but
that. The photographer captured and
combined an incredible 16 hours of
exposures. Some of the outer shell
seen here is newly discovered.
