“Mr. Inbetween” returns to FX for a second season. And a new British mini-series is streaming on BritBox.

What’s on TV

MR. INBETWEEN 10 p.m. on FX. Toggling between work and family life can be a challenge no matter your profession, but it’s especially trying for Ray Shoesmith, the contract killer at the center of this series. Outside of work, Ray is also raising a young daughter and trying to foster a new, postdi- vorce relationship. Played by the Austral- ian actor and writer Scott Ryan, Ray spent the first season both nurturing life and taking it away, easing his daughter into the news that Santa isn’t real in one scene and having a shootout in another. In his review of that season for The New York Times, Mike Hale referred to the show as “another dark comedy about the divided soul of the 21st-century male, caught between rage and cuddly vulnerability — in dramatic terms, between Scorsese and ‘Everybody Loves Raymond.’ ” The story, Hale added, “deftly and dryly exploits the gap between Ray’s violent occupation and his efforts to be a good father, boyfriend, brother, ex- husband and mentor.” Ray will continue straddling that gap in the second season beginning Thursday.

What’s Streaming

THE VICTIM Stream on BritBox. Kelly Mac- donald (“Boardwalk Empire”) and John Hannah (“Four Weddings and a Funeral”) star in this British mini-series. The seed of the story is a boy’s murder. Years after that crime, the boy’s mother, Anna (Macdon- ald), is accused of leaking the identity of the man she believes is the killer. The leak results in a brutal attack on the supposed killer, which leads to Anna being investi- gated as an accessory to the new crime. (Hannah plays the detective on the case.) It’s a sinuous plot that does everything it can to keep viewers questioning their own conclusions. “The title is great because you’re wondering who the victim is,” Mac- donald recently told The Guardian. “Read- ing the script, my allegiances were switch- ing, so I hope it’s the same for viewers.”

BE NATURAL: THE UNTOLD STORY OF ALICE GUY-BLACHÉ (2019) Rent on Amazon, Google Play, iTunes, Vudu and YouTube. Alice Guy Blaché was a pioneer of early cinema, credited as both the first female movie director and first female studio head. But many have never heard of her. This documentary, directed by Pamela B. Green, is a step toward changing that. To shed light on Guy Blaché’s overlooked career, Green documents her own mission to track down artifacts from the filmmaker’s life and search for any descendants. “The result,” A. O. Scott wrote in his review for The Times, “is occasionally a little frantic — animated segments sometimes bring the past to life and sometimes get in the way — and often tremendously moving.” ARCHIBALD’S NEXT BIG THING Stream on Netflix. In 2014, the “Veep” and “Arrested Development” actor Tony Hale was the co-author of a children’s book about an awkward young chicken named Archibald struggling to come into his own. Hale voices Archibald in this animated adapta- tion, which also brings together the voices of other celebrities, including Rosamund Pike, RuPaul and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. GABE COHN
