Exploring a section of the USA’s scenic Yellowstone Loop
UTAH
Spotlight on
E
very minute of the
nearly 2,000km
scenic Yellowstone
Loop makes you
stop and stare:
cloud-refl ecting lakes bordered
by undulating mountains, skies
polka-dotted with stars, cliffs
hiding fossilised dinosaurs. The
13-night journey begins in the
capital of Utah, Salt Lake City,
winding through Idaho, Montana
and Wyoming via the volcanic
Yellowstone National Park, before
looping back to the start. Here
we shine a light on the places you
can visit on Utah’s adventure-fi lled
segments of the loop...
SALT LAKE CITY
This mountain-fl anked
capital acts as the start and end
of the route. Make sure you visit
Temple Square, famous for its
Mormon culture and iconic
architecture. Stroll the rest of the
arty Downtown before stopping
for dinner in the restaurant-fi lled
city centre. Visit Clark Planetarium
to learn about Utah’s many
International Dark Sky Parks
- places where the lack of pollution
means stars shine particularly
bright – before driving an hour
to Antelope Island State Park to
experience its glittering darkness.
PIONEER HISTORY
Return to the wild west on your
next stop, walking Odgen’s
historic 25th street, past the
rickety railway station and Senate
Saloon. Later, head into Odgen
Valley to trek past trout-fi lled
streams. Hike, horseride and
canoe through mountains
in nearby Logan before driving
30 minutes to Bringham’s
Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge
to see North America’s largest
white-faced ibis colony.
BEAR LAKE
This 30km-long lake, your last
stop in Utah before you head
into Idaho, is so blue it looks like
it’s Photoshopped. Kayak,
kitesurf or paddleboard on its silky
top, then dive under to see the
lake’s endemic fi sh. Afterwards,
trek into the mountains to see
the still lake from up high.
DINOSAUR
COUNTRY
After exploring Yellowstone and
Grand Teton National Parks,
loop back into Utah to see
Flaming Gorge and its Red
Canyon, famous for its dramatic
views and nearly 15,000 fi sh
per mile on the Green River. Try
and catch a few, or go rafting on
its waters. Next, visit the nearly
800 sq km Dinosaur National
Monument – the fi nal resting
place of the pre-historic reptiles.
Marvel at the 1,500 fossils in
the Wall of Bones before
exploring the 80-million-
year-old geology on the
one-hour Fossil Discovery Trail.
PARK CITY
Park City in the Rockies offers
year-round adventure. Ski and
snowshoe in winter or bike and
hike 700km of trails in
summer. Don’t miss the warm,
cobalt waters of the Homestead
Crater – a fi ne way to end this epic
tripthroughtheUSA’swildwest.
