Will Burrard-Lucas,
photographer
Most people travel to
Africa in the dry season
and for good reason; it’s when the
vegetation is at its sparsest and
animals congregate around water
making them easy to
ind. However,
as a photographer I prefer the wet
or ‘emerald’ season, when the bush
s a million shades of vibrant green.
Dramatic cloudy skies build up in the
afternoon and the air is washed clean
of dust resulting in wonderful light.
t is also much quieter,meaning
you will have sightingsto yourself.

As a UNESCO
biosphere reserve
renowned for its
temperate rainforests
and spectacular
glacier-clad
mountains, Olympic
National Park in
my home state of
Washington is a must-
see destination for
nature lovers.
I love to take a drive
on Obstruction Point
Road – a rugged
unpaved track. The
turn o from the
main road in the park,
Hurricane Ridge Road,
is hidden and looks like
you are driving o a
cli . The photographic
payo s are great: deer
graze in wildlower
meadows and there
are spectacular views
across the mountains.
The trailhead is at the
end of the road. Note
that the road is closed
October-July.
