daughter “Fiona”
is 21 and just
moved to her o wn
apartment. Not a
great
neighborhood, but my first
apartment wasn’t i n a great
neighborhood, either.
Fiona has a lways been
empathetic a nd kind. She donates
her t ime at s oup kitchens, fosters
rescue animals, and will go t he
extra mile f or friends a nd f amily.
To day she sent o ut a family-
and-friends group text saying s he
has d iscovered an e ncampment of
homeless p eople living near her
apartment. S he s ees t hem on h er
drive to and from work. She
wants to help and h as asked us to
donate spare blankets, w arm
clothing, feminine hygiene
products, “durable” non-cook
foods (e.g., peanut b utter, granola
bars, crackers), and t oiletries, and
she w ill stop by and deliver them.
This is a wonderful idea but it
seems risky, a nd I am conflicted. It
seems to me like a bad move at t his
time in Fiona’s life. She lives alone,
and close to the encampment.
Sometimes desperate people do
desperate things. I would rather
she tempered her generosity with
practical safety a nd let us donateto a homeless shelter in her name
rather than her hand-delivering
items.
How should I reply?
— Hard-HeartedHard-Hearted: Reply with a
donation of spare blankets, warm
clothing, feminine hygiene
products, accessible foods and/or
toiletries. She is going to be the
person who does things like this
no matter what, with or without
your support; she’ll do it next time
even if you talk her out of it this
time; and she’s g oing to do her
own accounting of risk vs. reward.
I know you’re worried. But I
think you will feel better if you
choose, consciously, t o turn y our
face toward her light.

what a wonderful t hing she wants
to do.
If you’re scared, offer to go o ut
with her or ask her t o take a

Also, trust your d aughter that
she w on’t g ive o ut her address. I
assume she w ouldn’t t o any
stranger, and t here is n o reason to
treat a person experiencinghomelessness d ifferently in that
regard. We need m ore Fionas in
the w orld.

me. I f anything, knowing them
