BeforeThursday, few had heard of
Yusniel Padron-Artiles. With one playoff
relief outing for theLowell Spinners, that
changed.
Padron-Artiles entered
the Spinners’ game in the
top of the fourth inning as
a pi ggybackstarterbehind highly touted
Sox prospectJay Groome. The righthand-
er, a 22nd-roundselection in 2018, deliv-
ered a historic performance,striking out
12 straight batters in an eventual 2-1
Lowell win –the most consecutivestrike-
outs in affiliatedpro baseball,whether
the major or minorleagues.
The pe rformance from a previously
unheralded pitcher came with liberal use
of a pitch thatPadron-Artiles did not
have beforethis spring:A slider, apitch
he learned to mix with his fastball, chan-
geup, and slowcurve. The re sult was
dominance inLowell this year (7-1, 2.67
ERA, 11.8 strikeouts per nine innings),
and apath forward in the organization
with at least a chance of a bigleague fu-
ture – a possibility that, if fulfilled,would
represent a rousingsuccessgiven where
he was drafted.
He is a story of a healthy pitcher devel-
opmentculture, one that starts with the
scouting ofvaluable traits(command, de-
ception, competitiveness, makeup) to
bringaplayerintoanorganizationand
then continueshis improvement through
playerdevelopment recommendations.
That pattern hasbeenwidespread in the
Red Soxsystem thisyear.
At thebig league level, and specifically
the big league rotation — it has been a di-
sastrous year for Red Sox pitching, one
that has savage d their postseason outlook
in 2019.But onthe horizon,there is
emerging promise.
The talent poolis growing. Right-
handerTannerHouck (8-6, 4.01 ERA in
Double A andTriple A) looks like he’ll be
ready tocontributeout of either the rota-
tion or bullpen (he finished the year as a
reliever inPawtucket, but will start in the
ArizonaFall League)in 2020. Bryan Mata
(20 years old) tooka sizablestep forward
in High A and then DoubleA. He, too,
may be a 2020 optionin the big leagues.
In Lowell, thereturn ofGroome (21)
fromTommyJohn surgery and arrival of
fourth-rounderNoah Song (22) — in
combination withMata — gave the Red
Sox threepitchers with the ceilingsof
mid-rotation (orhigher) starters. Right-
handerThad Ward (22) built on a domi-
nant first full pro season (8-5, 2.14 ERA,
11.2 strikeoutsper nine innings in Single
A andHigh A) with six innings of one-run
ball in a playoffstart for Salemon Thurs-
day. Lefthander Chris Murphy (1.08ERA
in 33‚ innings) was a revelationwith a
back-of-the-rotation ceiling after being
takenin the sixthround.
Yet the promise for the Sox goes be-
yond the performances of individual
pitchers.The improvementsmade by nu-
merouspitchers in the system suggest
that afteryears of struggling to transform
prospects into successful bigleaguers, the
team may have rebuilt afunctional pipe-
line that can flow relatively efficiently
from the lowest levels to thebig leagues.
“We’ve seen guysget be tter,’’ said mi-
nor league pitching coordinatorof perfor-
mance DaveBush.“In some cases, they’re
guys that we like more than the rest of
baseball, guys wewere pretty high on be-
fore this year that so far have proven that
[team perspective] to be true. It’s just
part of the process of player development
where we’re alw ays lookingat certain
skills guys have and looking to make
them better. I think you’ve seen that on
the field.”
It hasn’t just been seenin the minors.
DarwinzonHernandez hasgone from a
scouting find for $7,500 inVenezuela to a
dominant late-inningsreliever as a 22-
year-old.Josh Taylor, acquired fromthe
Diamondbacks forDeven Marrerolast
year, has likewise emerged as astandout
bullpen performer afternarrowing his
pitch mix to a four-seam fastball and slid-
er andsharpening those two weaponsin
his 16 months with the RedSox.
Their success signals that the Red Sox
— who saw highly regardedprospects Al-
len Webste r, Henry Owens, Anthony
Ranaudo, andMichael Bowdenstruggle
to get over theproverbial hump – may be
ready todo just that with greater consis-
tency moving forward.
“If you’re lookingat, over thenext 12
to 18months, really having depth, and
not just having depthgetting to themid-
levelsof the minor leagues but depth that
can be able tohelp us next year when we
need astarter, we do feel like we have
some in-houseoptions going into next
year,” said Red Sox assistant G M Eddie
Romero.
