A COMMON CONCERN
It’s completely normal to encounter
vaginal dryness at some point
in your life, particularly when
approaching or going through
menopause. In fact, it’s incredibly
common. As many as 47% of
menopausal women experience
vaginal dryness.

WHO, WHAT, WHY
Vaginal dryness is usually connected
to the decline of the female hormone
estrogen, which can be triggered
by childbirth, breastfeeding and,
most commonly, menopause. About
half of postmenopausal women will
experience genitourinary syndrome
of menopause (GSM), which is a
grouping of symptoms affecting the
genitals and bladder and includes
external dryness and irritation, as
well as poor vaginal lubrication
during sex.
Other causes of vaginal dryness
include certain medications, stress,
cancer treatment or diabetes.

ALL THE UNCOMFORTABLE DETAILS
You may feel symptoms all the time
or only sometimes, such as during

or after sex, when using tampons or
at the end of your menstrual cycle.
Symptoms include:

  • Vaginal irritation, itching or discomfort

  • Painful or more frequent urination

  • Urinary tract infections

A SECRET AFFAIR
While menopausal symptoms like
hot flashes or trouble sleeping get
plenty of air time, women rarely
discuss vaginal dryness because it’s
still a bit of a taboo topic. In fact,
half of women are too embarrassed
to discuss it with their health-care
provider and end up leaving their
symptoms untreated — and that’s no
way to live.

SEX ED
Not only is vaginal dryness
associated with a lower sex drive
and difficulty with arousal and
orgasm, it can also cause discomfort,
pain, tearing or bleeding during
sex, which may make you avoid
sex altogether. This can strain your
intimate connections and impact
your well-being and quality of life.

WE’LL LET YOU IN ON A LITTLE SECRET: IF YOU’RE
EXPERIENCING VAGINAL DRYNESS, YOU’RE NOT ALONE.
