HIGH SCHOOL
In their memoir, Calgary-born twins Tegan and Sara
Quin chart the turbulent teenage years that pre-
ceded (just barely) their indie-pop stardom. Both women
possess a candid, conversational style and conjure vivid
stories—about first crushes and changing friendships—that
cast readers back to their own high school days. There’s
even a soundtrack for the book: the Quins’ ninth album,
Hey, I’m Just Like You, which reimagines and remakes the
early songs they wrote together in their bedrooms. Sept. 24.

PAIN AND GLORY
Pedro Almodóvar trades his
provocative flair for a more
meditative approach in this highly
autobiographical film, starring Antonio
Banderas as Salva—an Almodóvar
stand-in who lives in a replica of the
Spanish filmmaker’s apartment. (Having
collaborated eight times with the direc-
tor, Banderas effortlessly pulls off the role.)
The film toggles between the present—where
a frail Salva, hampered by writer’s block,
reconnects with a former flame—and the past,
back to the childhood village where he lived with
his spirited mother (Penélope Cruz, of course), and
when he felt the first tug of sexual awakening. Oct 4.
