Pyrgic puzzles
1 I found the Pedanticus kicking his DAB radio
around the kitchen screaming “On his part!
On his part!”. What on Radio 4 (where would
we be without it, warts and all?) could have
triggered this fi t of calcitrant behaviour?
2 Meanwhile, in Gelignite Gulch, Marshal Law
was delighted at the number that rolled up to
be in his posse— a better showing than that
embarrassing time when only 4 had turned
up!— but the fact that it was again a perfect
square made it all feel quite propitious. He
therefore bought each of them the same
number of candies as there were members of
the posse. Just as they were about to set off
a number fewer than there had been joined
them. On sharing the sweets fairly among the
posse he found he had just 2 left over, which
he pocketed. How many in the original posse?

How many rolled up? How many sweets did
they each receive?
3 Andy was alarmed to be asked to sum this
series to infi nity:
x 2 + (3/2)x 4 + 2x 6 + (5/2)x 8 + 3x 10 + ...
Adding a couple of things seemed
reasonable. But how do you go about
adding an infi nite number of things together
anyway? Why, you’d be at it for ever. But it
didn’t phase Candy. What did she do?
4 In Gradus ad Parnassum we read of Ben
Netlark’s robotic fl ea (Miriam) starting at
the bottom of a fl ight of n stairs. Due to a
programming fault (yes, fl eas have bugs) the
only moves she can make are to jump up one
step or two. How many ways are there of her
jumping to the top of the stairs?

Killer sudoku

Hard No 674

The normal rules of Sudoku apply: fi ll each row, column and 3x3 box with all
the numbers from 1 to 9. In addition, the digits in each inner shape (marked by
dots) must add up to the number in the top corner of that box. No digit can be
repeated within an inner shape.
