This week’s deals have treated “avoidance” plays: prevent-
ing a “dangerous” defender from gaining the lead. To see
whether you have the idea, cover the East-West cards.
Plan your play at four spades when West leads the king of
clubs.
You have the material for 10 tricks — you can hope to
use dummy’s long diamonds — but the bidding marks West
with the ace of hearts. If East gets in and leads a heart, you
will have four losers. East is “dangerous,” so you must set
up the diamonds without letting him gain the lead.
Your best chance is to duck the first club. If West shifts
to a trump, win in your hand and lead the jack of clubs, let-
ting West’s queen win — a loser-on-loser play.
You can win the next trump in your hand, take the top
diamonds,pitchyourlastdiamondontheaceofclubsand
ruff a diamond. Then you draw the missing trump with
dummy’s queen and take the two good diamonds for heart
discards. You lose one heart at the end but make your vul-
nerable game.
DAILY QUESTIONYou hold:♠ 75 ♥♥AQJ6♦♦J10♣KQ
10 8 3. You open one club, and your partner bids one
spade. What do you say?
ANSWER:A rebid of two clubs would be the choice of some
players but would imply longer clubs. Bid 1NT to show a
balanced, minimum opening bid. If partner holds a hand
such as A 9 6 4 2, K 10 8 5, 6 5, 7 6, he will bid two hearts,
not forcing, next, and you will reach a heart partscore. But
partner would pass a rebid of two clubs with that hand.

HAPPY BIRTHDAYfor Friday,
Sept. 13, 2019:
This year, you gain the ability to
seebothsidesofanissue.You
could find this overwhelming, but
if used properly, you will gain. If
single, you might be able to relate
more easily to people, especially a
touchy, potential sweetie. If at-
tached, the two of you can choose
to fight or learn to understand
each other's decisions better. PI-
SCES encourages you to identify
with others.
ARIES (March 21-April 19)
You might be feeling as if you
need a change of pace. Give your-
self permission to do just that.
You have a strong sense of how to
deal with a child, a co-worker, or
possibly a pet. You feel more se-
cure even if you are not express-
ing your thoughts. Tonight: Play it
cool.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20)
Zero in on what you want. A key
friend comes through for you but
expects you to do your share in
making a situation work. Open up
to suggestions. You could be more
in tune with what others want
than you realize. Tonight: Join
friends; celebrate the weekend.
GEMINI (May 21-June 20)
Tension builds in odd ways. Much
of it comes from your need to stay
on top of a professional situation.
You might be making demands of
yourself that no one else is. Stop
and rethink a decision. Tonight: A
force to be dealt with.
CANCER (June 21-July 22)
Your feelings come out in a dis-
cussion. The other party sees life
a lot differently than you do. By
walking in this person's shoes,
you come to a new conclusion.
You will come to a point of under-
standing and agreement. Tonight:
Consider taking off.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)
One-on-one relating is highlight-
ed. Your ability to move through a
problem also could be highlight-
ed. At first, a partner might want
to approach a purchase or finan-
cial agreement much differently.
Do not settle; find a solution that
works for both of you. Tonight:
Let go and get into the spirit of
the weekend.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)
You cannot question your popu-
larity. Many people come toward
you. Some come for information;
others seek your attention. By the
end of the day, you cannot say
that you have a lack of admirers
and invitations. Be responsive to a
close friend or loved one. Tonight:
Say yes!
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)
Reach out for a friend or associ-
ate. As a question comes up, you
find that you have an answer to
the issue at hand. You might need
to convince your cohorts of the
rightness of your ideas. Tonight:
Out with a work associate.
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)
Your playfulness emerges when
dealing with a fun friend, loved
one or child. You seem unusually
inventive and creative as you pop
up with suggestions. Do not feel
pressured to act in a certain man-
ner. Tonight: A friend comes
through for you.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)
Pressure builds, and you are likely
to respond to others' demands. A
family member or roommate
wants more time or something
special from you, whereas a boss
might want you to contribute
more time to a project. You have
your hands full. Tonight: Listen to
your inner voice.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)
You speak your mind loudly and
clearly. Finding agreement will
not be too hard as long as every-
one involved is sincere about
coming up with a solution. Play
with different ideas. Consider the
end results. Tonight: Join the
gang for TGIF.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)
Be aware of the costs of continu-
ing as you have. Though the situa-
tion and timing work on some
level for you, financially you need
to be careful. Do not offer up
more than you can afford. To-
night: Invite a friend to join you.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)
You are able to make an impres-
sion on a key person. You might
be trying to get an agreement
with certain people. This could in-
volve your social life, rather than
your work or something else. To-
night: All smiles.
