Lace ABC
Dress your table to impress with this lace-effect alphabet, created using dainty
backstitch detail and a few well-placed whole stitches and French knots
By Susan Bates
1
Find the centre of your
fabric by folding it in
half both horizontally and
vertically. The centre point
is where the two folds
meet and form a cross.
Find the centre of your
chart and start stitching
from here, in the centre of
the fabric, working your
way outwards.
2
Complete all the cross
stitch in the design first
using two strands of white
cotton. It is important
to finish all of the cross
stitches before you move
on to the backstitch or
French knots.
3
Work the backstitch
after you have
completed all of the
cross stitch – backstitch is
worked in two strands of
white cotton for the letters
in this alphabet.
4
Work the French knots
last of all, using two
strands of white cotton.
5
Carefully check over
your finished stitching
and then prepare it for
making up.
