JOHN WHEELER
Liverpool FC’s oldest living captain passed
away in November, aged 91, and the thoughts
are everyone at the club are with his family
and friends. Crosby-born John was a right-sided
attacker who joined the Reds aged 28 from
Bolton Wanderers in September 1956. He’d go
on to make 177 appearances, scoring 23 goals –
including a five-minute hat-trick against Port Vale
- and was appointed skipper by manager Phil
Taylor for the 1958/59 season. He left in 1963 to
become an assistant-trainer at Bury.
John was a guest at Anfield in April 2018 when
club chief-executive Peter Moore presented him
with a framed photo including this message
from Jürgen Klopp: “LFC is only the club it is
today thanks to players like you YNWA.”
