using VLC

Load thevideo and watch itthrough tomakesureyou’re

familiar withwhereyou want thestart andend points to

be.Use theslider^1 to get thevideo near to your

preferredstarting point.Clickthe Playbutton^2 and

immediately pressthe Record button^3 whenyouget to the

correct place.

First,we’ll lookat howtotrim video, so youcan remove

unwanted sectionsto crea te aclip. To do this,youneed

some extratools. Open theView menu^1 and choose

AdvancedControls.^2 This addsaRecor dbutton^3 and a

useful ‘Frameby fram e’ button.^4

Youhavetomarkthe endof your clip manually. When the

video getsto the stop point,click theRecord button

again.^1 Thetrimmed videofile is savedtoyour Videos

folder with‘vlc_record’att he frontof its name.^2 Do thisas

manytimes asrequiredto collect theclips thatyou need.

While VLCisperfectly capable ofsticking video clips

together,the optionwasremovedfromthe la test version

of thegraphical interface. However,the action canstillbe

performed from theCommand Prompt.Start by renami ng the

files youwant to stitch together–use asimple,consecutive

system, suchasnumbering them.^1

LCisusuallythoughtofasamediaplayer,andaverygood

oneatthat.However,there’smoretothesoftwarethan

meetstheeye.Didyouknowyoucanuseittomake

simpleeditstoyourvideosaswellasjustwatchthem?This

savesyouneedingtodownloadaseparatevideo-editing

toolifyou’reshortonspaceordon’tuseoneoftenenough

tojustifytheinstallation.

VLC’seditingtools areabitrough andready,but because

its optionsarelimited, it canbe usedtocreateclean,

unfussyvideos,free ofelaboratetransitionsthatcan be

tootemptingtoignoreinregular video editors. That

said, thesoftwarecan also perform ahandfulofmagic

tricks totransform your footage,whichwelookatin

the lasttwosteps ofthis workshop.
