The thing that worried me was that people would
think that was what you had to do [to succeed].”
She has cocooned herself with fellow new
stars: the likes of Fran Summers, Vittoria Ceretti
and Mica Argañaraz are a family away from
home. One morning, I find myself sitting with
a gang of her peers, backstage at the Grand
Palais, between Virginie Viard’s two successive
debut couture shows for Chanel. Kaia, having
temporarily traded crystal-encrusted tweeds and
blooming origami florals for hotpants and a
vintage blazer, nips out in search of sweets.
“Make me sound good to Olivia,” she implores.
“No matter how tired we are or how many shows
we have done, she is a big fuzzy ball of love and
lols,” Summers obliges. “She’s taught me you
can’t take it all too seriously, but always to be
grateful and kind.” It’s a bit Miss World, I think,
which makes sense: even her mother says when
Kaia was growing up, the family would make
fun of her angelic aura. “If we’d ask, ‘What was
the best part of your day?’, she’d always have
this perfect answer,” says Cindy. “We’d joke at
the end and say, ‘... and world peace’.”
Time off is reserved for the occasional collective
dinner, or a box-set binge of Friends in a hotel
room. As unusually attractive young women, do
they make time for romance chat between seeking
out their favourite Korean barbecue restaurants?
“When I’m working, I don’t have the energy to
even flirt with anyone. I’m sorry, I just can’t,”
she laughs. “But I’m not losing hope in all love
forever.” Plus: “I have backgammon at my house,
and that’s really all a girl needs. When I’m home,
I’m living the life of a 70-year-old woman.”
That’s another charming thing about Gerber.
Though she could appear an all-American
princess, she’s resolute in maintaining a somewhat
geeky persona. As Virgil Abloh attests, “She’s a
perfect example of the importance of always
being yourself in order to excel.”
At the restaurant, when I grill her on her beauty
regime, she rolls her eyes (she spends half her life
having her brows bleached and re-dyed, she says),
but when I ask what book she’s reading, she lights
up and extols the virtues of Roland Barthes.
If she were to stand for one thing to the
hordes of girls who look up to her, “it’s just
being yourself: not being afraid to read a book
or talk about things that might be considered
nerdy. The documented moments – for everyone,
but especially a model – are the most glamorous.
But I don’t want people to see me on runways
and think that’s what I do every day. It skews
people’s perception of the world when all they
see is the best moments.”
As if on cue, she flips over her phone, revealing
two stickers: one of her mother in her ’80s
heyday, all windswept hair and tight denim; the
other big, bold text reading, “Social media
seriously harms your mental health.” I call for
the bill – Kaia hasn’t got long before she’s due
at Givenchy, to be fitted for a gown sprouting
hundreds of hand-stitched feathers. “I’m always
on time,” says the girl with the world at her feet.
She couldn’t be better equipped for it. n
