W.E.B. DU BOIS
MEMORIAL CENTRE
Pioneering American scholar
and activist W.E.B. Du Bois
became a Ghanaian citizen in
the early 1960s and spent his
last years in a house that’s since
become a museum dedicated
to his memory. On display?
Fascinating manuscripts and
works from his personal library,
which the team perused in
their downtime.
REPUBLIC BAR & GRILL
Accra’s beau monde spends its nights
at Republic, so, naturally, it was a
must-do for Vogue. As the evening
unwinds, the scene at the open-air bar
morphs into a full-on party, with DJs
or live music, and the akpeteshie
starts to flow. The locally brewed
liquor is the base for many of
Republic’s legendary cocktails.
MAKOLA
MARKET
Locals flock to this
sprawling shopping
and hangout spot –
which provided the
backdrop to Vogue’s
shoot. The market
is a feast for the
senses, where you can
buy almost anything
under the sun –
including the vibrant
kente cloth used to
make Binx’s many
head wraps.
I
t was only a matter of time before
Accra, with its self-starting fashion
scene and enviable coastal position,
attracted the eye of Vogue’s fashion
team – who captured the gorgeous
colours and urban romance of the
Ghanaian capital for this month’s epic
20-page fashion shoot. After long days
spent in the warm bustle of the city, the
group – including photographer Juergen
Teller, model Binx Walton (right) and
senior contributing fashion editor Poppy Kain
- passed their nights at the glamorous
Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City, Accra’s
singular five-star hotel. As well as floating in
its cerulean infinity pool and de-stressing at
the Resense Spa and hammam, the team
unwound at the stylish bar, which, come
nightfall, hosts live music beneath its scalloped
chandeliers. Meanwhile, the hotel’s renowned
Gallery 1957 exhibits a mix of West African
artists in a sparkling white space. If it weren’t
for the serious allure of the metropolis
outside – its art, food and nightlife – there
would hardly be a reason to leave.
