Making Column 1 units

13

Unit A is the trickiest to sew,
so the process is described
in detail. The pieces are cut from
Templates A1, A2 and A3 – make
sure you have cut them from the
correct fabrics (see Fig 4A). Mark
the centre point of each shape with a
crease, as shown by the red lines.

14

Take piece A2 and place it
RS together with piece A1.
Pin together at the centre points.
Now, pin together at each end and at
points in between, easing the pieces
to match their curves together (Fig
4B). Sew a scant in seam, following
the curve smoothly. Press the seam
towards the lighter fabric. The sewn
unit should look like Fig 4C, with
straight edges at the top and bottom.
There should be a in of fabric on
each side of the sewn line – this will
ensure that piece A3 fits properly.

15

To attach piece A3, place it
RS together with the A1/A2
unit on top, as in Fig 4D, matching
the centre marks. Pin at the centre
points and then along the rest of the
curve. Sew a scant in seam (Fig
4E). Press the seam outwards. You
can snip into the seam at intervals if
you like, about in deep. The sewn
unit should look like Fig 4F, with
in seam allowances where shown.
Check the unit measures 6in x 4in.

16

Unit B is made the same way
as sewing shapes A1 and A2
together in step 14. Check the sewn
unit is 6in x 4in (Fig 5). There are
nine (9) of these units in Column
1 (down the left-hand side) and a
further nine (9) rotated 180-degrees
(right-hand side). Take care to
choose the correct fabrics for each
unit.
