The super-slick Coal Drops Yard
has a new fitness draw – and the
5,500 square-foot Equilibrium is as
stylish as its surroundings. Founders
Jay Brockway and Niko Algieri
wanted to build a studio that could
offer a thorough muscle-quivering,
metabolism-firing workout along-
side all the trappings of a boutique
hotel. Cue changing rooms lined
with healing lava tiles and a Tom
Dixon lamp-lit reception (plus
there’s a café serving organic coffee
and juices a mere lunge away). And
upstairs is the main fitness studio,
where you’ll veer between sprinting
on Woodway treadmills and core-
tautening circuits using resistance
bands and TRX cables in the signa-
ture EQ Total Body class. Other-
wise there’s a dark and cavernous
PT room, where barbell-hoisting
and kettlebell-swinging will reveal
abs you never knew you had.

per-hour sessions are kind but ef-
fective. There is no brandishing of
calipers; instead, he assesses your
posture, running style and thresh-
old for weight-lifting, before you
move on to strengthening and fat-
burning exercises packaged as
martial-arts training. Classes fly by
in a flurry of right kicks and left
hooks (super effective, judging by
the next day’s aching muscles). If you
can’t get a spot at one of his sessions,
he does online training, too. Try

Lanserhof has finally touched
down in London, in a colossal four-
storey townhouse opposite the Arts
Club. It’s the city’s most dazzling
fitness offering yet: a fusion of
functional training and medical
excellence, with a first-in-class
team (and raspberry-infused water
on tap). Past the glossy gym, with
its innovative Technogym Bio Cir-
cuit (log in via an app and ma-
chines automatically adjust your

weights, circuits and seat height), is
some seriously space-age equipment.
Like the Movement Lab: 360-de-
gree cameras film you on a tread-
mill, to determine skeletal imbal-
ances; an MRI, to analyse the body
and measure visceral fat; and a dual
cryotherapy chamber to reduce
inflammation. Cleverer still is the
Spine Lab, which tests, trains and
treats joints (strap into the ‘Cen-
taur’, which assesses and strength-
ens the back, by tilting you at all
angles to engage supporting mus-
cles). Don’t leave without trying
the ‘Icarus’ – an ingenious core
workout, which uses video gaming
technology to simulate a real flight.
A 20-minute ride, steering through
mountains and lakes, is so much
more fun than doing crunches.
